Hello Again... Not You

Previously:
A random girl had shown up at Kriya’s place. Things quickly spiralled, and she and the guy were all over each other.

Nimish and Kaaya left in a hurry. The entire ride, Kaaya was anxious, silently praying the situation wouldn’t escalate. Nimish placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, signalling her to relax. She blinked in response, half-grateful, half-distracted. They reached Kriya’s place, only to find the door blocked. Gautami and Akaay were in a heated fight. “Gau!” Kaaya called out.

Gautami didn’t turn around; Akaay had her in a tight hold. She swiftly kicked him in the leg, making him loosen his grip, then turned and hugged Kaaya tightly. “What is this idiot doing here?” she fumed. Kriya’s voice came from behind, sharp and defensive. “Excuse me, miss? Who are you to call my boyfriend?” “Oh, please,” Gautami shot back.
Kaaya grabbed Gautami’s hand, silently urging her to stop. “Let’s go to Nimish’s place,” she said softly. “I’ll explain everything.” Reluctantly, Gautami agreed.
As they were leaving, Kaaya looked back. “I’m really sorry for the scene Gau created. She didn’t mean to disrespect anyone.” Akaay smirked. “This cow(Gau) is mannerless. Don’t worry. Not surprised by her animal attack.” Kaaya gave him a polite, tight-lipped smile and walked away.

Nimish’s parents were due to arrive soon. On the way to the airport, Kaaya explained everything to Gautami. “Oh my God... wait a second. That Kriya? The same Kriya you used to hate?” Gautami asked, wide-eyed. Nimish glanced at Kaaya with mock surprise. “So, you’re capable of hating someone?” Kaaya nodded sheepishly. They picked up Nimish’s parents from the airport and introduced them to Gautami. Pleased by her warmth, they insisted she stay with them. No one objected. They all headed home.
Later that week, Nimish, Kaaya, and Gautami were out for a casual day together. Nimish bought chocolates for the three of them, carefully picking out a specific brand for Gautami, knowing she wasn’t much of a chocolate fan. Gautami smirked as she took it. Nimish noticed. “Wait, did I get the wrong one? Want me to get something else?” he asked. “Oh no,” she said with a teasing glint in her eyes. “Got me this just to keep me busy while you flirt with my best friend, huh?” Nimish blinked, confused. “What? No! I just wanted to include my best friend, too. That’s you.” Gautami suddenly realised she had just echoed something from the past, a similar moment with Akaay and Kaaya.
They walked in silence for a while.
That evening, while Kaaya was curled up reading a novel, Gautami sat beside her and said, “Hey, remember when Akaay got me a chocolate the first time the three of us met?” Kaaya closed the book and smiled. “Ohhh, how could I forget? He got you the wrong one, and you clearly hated it.” “Exactly! But here’s the thing he didn’t know I wasn’t into chocolates. Still, he thoughtfully got one. Not the point, though. It wasn’t about the chocolate... it was the thought.  To keep me engaged, so I’d stop interfering between you two! He said I was being the wingman and he wanted me to take off guards from you guys and middle less. Can you believe that?” Kaaya laughed. “That sounds just like him.” “I know, right? At first, I thought he was a jerk. I felt unwelcome. But later I realised he liked having me around. Treated me like a little sister or something...” Kaaya cut in, “Which is true.” “Yeah, it is,” Gautami admitted. “He was like this annoying brother with all the jokes, teasing, and ridiculous fights over who got more of your time.” Kaaya raised an eyebrow. “You… miss that?” Gautami shook her head. “Not exactly. I miss you being happy. I remember how lit up you were those two days you spent with him. You had enough stories to last us two months! I miss the memories we made together. This has nothing to do with Akaay.”
They smiled at each other. Kaaya spread her hands in the air, gesturing for Gautami to come over for a hug, and Gautami leaned in. It was a moment of silent warmth, a recognition of past joy and present healing.

Later, Gautami went to speak with Nimish, who was deep into a case study. She waited patiently until he noticed and gestured for her to sit. “Sorry to keep you waiting,” he said, closing his laptop. “Now, you have my full attention. What’s up?” “Nimish… promise me you’ll...” Before she could finish, he interrupted, smiling gently. “I promise you that I'll inviolably protect her...” Startled, she asked, “How did you know?” “You don’t need to ask, little one. I know how much she means to you.” Gautami smiled. “Then let’s start with something simple. I want to take her to her old place tomorrow. We’re going to plan her birthday.” Nimish nodded. “Done.”

Let’s see how things unfold from here…
